What are ECHA and REACH?
ECHA, otherwhise known as the European Chemicals Agency, has as main goal the protection of the environment and people in mind, protecting them from the possible risks posed by chemicals in the EU chemical industry. They provide everyone within our industry with advice, tools and support, and serve the European Union with transparent and independent scientific opinions and studies, lying at the basis of Union measures.
REACH, Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemical substances, is part of ECHA and places the burden of proof on chemical companies. To comply with the regulation, companies must identify and manage the risks linked to the substances they manufacture and market in the EU. They have to demonstrate to ECHA how the substance can be safely used, and they must communicate the risk management measures to the users.
EuPIA and the EuPIA exclusion policy
EuPIA or the European Printing Ink Association, a devision within CEPE (European Council of the Paint, Printing Ink and Artists‘ Colours Industry), is an organization representing the interests of the printing ink industry within Europe. EuPIA has developed an exclusion policy that outlines the types of raw materials that should not be used in the production of printing inks due to safety and regulatory concerns. The primary purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety and compliance of printing inks used in packaging and other printed materials that come into contact with food or other sensitive products.
Food Safety - GMP and Framework regulation
GMP, Good Manufacturing Practices assists in ensuring that inks, varnishes and coatings that are formulated to be printed on either the non-food contact or the food contact surfaces of food packaging. These we call Food Contact Materials ( or FCM ). The European safety rules for food packaging include the main food packaging safety law, also know as the "Framework regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004) and the good manufacturing practices regulation (Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006). By adhering to these regualtions, manufacturers ensure that their products are safe to use on food packaging, and little to no chemicals can migrate into the contents of said packaging.
It is important to note that the last player in the chain, the printer, must confirm in writing that the printed material is FCM compliant with the relevant legislation (Declaration of Compliance). As manufacturer of low migration inks and coatings, we can assist you in this doccumentation by giving our customers a SoC, Statement of Composition, of the requested ink or coating.
